Thank you for your extensive research. The immigration of Jews to Britain is surprising because at the same time Britons were massively emigrating to the USA or to the dominions in search of a better life; and probably an escape from the stifling class system. I believe poor Eastern European Jews to move to North and South America en masse because these were the new promised lands of milk and honey.
I believe that the help poor Jews received is understated. Many of them climbed to middle and upper class status in one or two generations. How many regular Englishmen achieved this ? At the time secondary schools were not free and universities were outright expensive. The wealthy paying the tuition of the bright pupils is a considerable aid.
I am sensitive to this last topic because of the history of my family. In my ancestry families would finance the secondary and tertiary studies of one boy who was good with books. They usually had bright careers. In some cases extra children won scholarships; one of my grandfathers for instance. Some other children received training in the trades. The remainder were stuck with a primary school education and working the land or unqualified jobs. As far as family memory goes, this pattern lasted for 3 generations before the second world war.
This is something I barely covered in the essay but did find in the reading. There was the Board of Guardians that helped Jewish immigrants find what they needed to survive and make initial contacts. There were education options like the Jews' Free School, largely funded by the old, wealthy Cousinhood. Jews also got free state education as that grew, with some schools in the East End being almost entirely full of Jewish pupils, at least in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. One thing I did mention was that Jewish would-be merchants could get credit from more established providers if they showed attachment to the tribe and religious observance. Jewish customers tended to patronise Jewish shops who tended to patronise Jewish wholesalers. The older Jewish establishment in Britain also concerned itself in general with ensuring that immigration didn't hugely increase crime, the public notability of Jews, and above all welfare. If nothing else, they emphatically wanted to avoid Jewish immigrants being seen to move into Britain and live on welfare, knowing how objectionable that would be.
