I agree, though it can be said the British ought to have aspired to produce an elite capable of displacing and gatekeeping those rotten elements. I've heard, I think from leftists, the notion that we common folk live as imperial subjects too in the 'internal empire'. Our rulers have as much contempt for us as for any distant colonial subjects and perhaps more.

If by Britain you mean Churchill, Lloyd George and co, yes. Most ordinary Brits had no beef with the continent.
